If there’s one thing that students miss, it’s in-person field trips. When I was younger, field trips were my favorite part of the school year because it applied what we were learning, and I could get a better understanding of the topic overall that a test couldn’t teach me. But unfortunately, COVID-19 put a stop to things when the virus initially shut everything down, including schools and in-person field trips.

However, now that things are slowly opening back-up, your kids finally have the opportunity to experience field trips again, and this time, the family is invited!

Mayor Lee Harris has created a program called 901 Student Passport, where school-aged students can visit eight museums and attractions in the area for free, along with a parent or legal guardian.

The eight museums and attractions include The National Civil Rights Museum, The Fire Museum of Memphis, Memphis Rock n’ Soul Museum, Pink Palace Museum of Science and History, Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum, Lichterman Nature Center, and Dixon Garden and Gallery. Talk about a field trip!

When a student arrives at a location, they must show their passport to an employee so they and a parent may receive free admission. They will also receive a stamp on their passport.

If a student completes their passport and receives stamps from visiting all eight locations, the student gets a special gift from Mayor Lee Harris himself.

All completed passports should be mailed to Shelby County Mayor's Office, 160 N. Mail, 11th Floor, Memphis, TN 38103 or emailed to officeofthemayor@shelbycountytn.gov.

901 Student Passport started in early October and extends to the end of 2020, so make sure to take advantage of this opportunity while you can! You can find the passports by downloading them here, or you can pick them up at a local library.

Make sure you and your kids stay safe and mask up at each location.

Have a great trip!
